WASHINGTON, DC — Following today’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on “judicial accountability,” the Not Above the Law coalition’s co-chairs – Lisa Gilbert, Co-President of Public Citizen; Praveen Fernandes, Vice President of the Constitutional Accountability Center; Kelsey Herbert, Campaign Director at MoveOn; and Brett Edkins, Managing Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Stand Up America – released the following statement:
“Today’s hearing is the latest in a pattern of attacks from congressional Republicans designed to amplify President Trump’s relentless pressure and threats against judges who dare to hold his administration accountable. This political spectacle seeks to distract from the Trump administration’s lawlessness by pointing blame at judges simply fulfilling their constitutional duties.
“Trump and his allies have even made ludicrous calls to impeach judges for rulings that displease the administration. As Chief Justice Roberts has said, “For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision.”
“Judges who rule against the Trump administration aren’t ‘rogue’ – they’re upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all Americans. This hearing is a transparent attempt to intimidate the judiciary into rubber-stamping Trump’s agenda rather than serving as an independent check on executive overreach. Congressional Republicans are enabling Trump’s efforts to undermine the constitutional separation of powers protecting our democracy. We will continue to stand with judges who refuse to be bullied into abandoning the law.”
