| Comey Indictment Comes Less Than A Week After Trump Asked Bondi to Go After Political Enemies |
WASHINGTON — Following today’s indictment of former FBI Director James Comey on obstruction and false statement charges, the Not Above the Law coalition’s co-chairs condemn this blatant abuse of prosecutorial power that prioritizes political retribution over public safety. The charges come just days after Trump publicly demanded action against Comey and other perceived enemies, calling them “guilty as hell.” Trump’s handpicked loyalist Lindsey Halligan – who has no prosecutorial experience but previously represented Trump personally – rubber-stamped the indictment. In response, the Not Above the Law coalition’s co-chairs – Lisa Gilbert, Co-President of Public Citizen; Praveen Fernandes, Vice President of the Constitutional Accountability Center; Kelsey Herbert, Campaign Director at MoveOn; and Brett Edkins, Managing Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Stand Up America – released the following statement: “Today’s indictment of James Comey represents the dangerous ongoing weaponization of our justice system. This prosecution – pursued only after Trump publicly demanded action against his perceived enemies and forced out a career prosecutor who refused to comply – shows how far Trump will go to exact revenge on those who he feels have crossed him. “This has all the hallmarks of a vindictive and meritless prosecution. Yet Trump’s handpicked replacement is proceeding anyway, ignoring both DOJ guidelines and prosecutorial ethics. When the Department of Justice becomes a tool for settling personal grudges rather than protecting Americans from real threats, our liberties are in grave danger. Agencies that should investigate terrorism and organized crime must not become personal revenge squads for the president. Congress must act to restore independence to our justice system and stop this authoritarian abuse of power – Trump’s attorney general has made clear she won’t.” For questions about our work to hold Trump accountable or to request an interview with a Not Above the Law coalition leader, please email michael@focalpointstrategygroup.com. |
