WASHINGTON, DC — Following Donald Trump’s calls for Republicans to nationalize elections, the Not Above the Law coalition’s co-chairs – Lisa Gilbert, Co-President of Public Citizen; Praveen Fernandes, Vice President of the Constitutional Accountability Center; Kelsey Herbert, Campaign Director at MoveOn; and Brett Edkins, Managing Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Stand Up America – released the following statement:
“Donald Trump’s calls to nationalize elections represent a dangerous escalation in his assault on Americans’ freedom to vote. He’s openly advocating for a federal takeover of state-run elections – a brazen consolidation of power by an administration that has repeatedly defied the rule of law and the will of the American people.
“When the administration inevitably tries to dismiss these remarks as mere rhetoric, we must remember his record. Donald Trump has a documented history of attempting to override the will of voters, and now he is simply saying the quiet part out loud. He pressured state officials to ’find’ votes in 2020 and incited a violent insurrection to overturn a free and fair election. These comments are part of a deliberate pattern of undermining democracy whenever the outcome doesn’t serve him.
“Congressional Republicans have a constitutional duty to immediately reject these proposals. All lawmakers have a responsibility to defend state-run elections, protect the independence of election officials, and hold Trump accountable for his continued attacks on our democratic system. The stakes couldn’t be higher.”
