| WASHINGTON — The Not Above the Law coalition decries yet another blatant abuse of law enforcement by the Trump administration – this time, with the indictment of New York Attorney General Letitia James. The charges against James come just two weeks after newly installed loyalist prosecutor Lindsey Halligan secured an indictment against former FBI Director James Comey – and days after Trump publicly demanded prosecutions of both James and Comey, calling them “guilty as hell.” The shameless and corrupt orchestration by Trump showcases just how far he’ll go in corrupting law enforcement. Earlier today, the Not Above the Law coalition released Trump’s ‘Crooked Cops:’ The Corruption of Federal Law Enforcement, a report documenting how Trump and his hand-picked loyalists are abusing their power and leaving Americans less safe with a justice system that serves the President, not the public. The coalition held a press call with Ranking Member Joe Morelle, Rep. Dan Goldman, and former prosecutor Katie Phang to discuss the report’s findings (full video here). The James indictment exemplifies the pattern of corruption detailed in the report. In response to this latest indictment, the Not Above the Law coalition’s co-chairs – Lisa Gilbert, Co-President of Public Citizen; Praveen Fernandes, Vice President of the Constitutional Accountability Center; Kelsey Herbert, Campaign Director at MoveOn; and Brett Edkins, Managing Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Stand Up America – released the following statement: “The indictment of Attorney General Letitia James is yet another example of Trump’s crooked cops at work. This is not just an attack on one person – it’s an attack on the rule of law itself. A president who abuses federal law enforcement to selectively punish those who hold him accountable puts our justice system and our country in danger. “This isn’t about justice – it’s about intimidation, revenge, and consolidating unchecked power. First James Comey, now Letitia James – and the question isn’t if there will be more victims of Trump’s revenge campaign, but rather who’s next. Trump has made it clear that prosecutors who refuse to manufacture cases are fired and replaced with loyalists who will. The people who should be law enforcers have become tools of personal vengeance, and prosecutors who actually enforce the law to hold Trump accountable are their prime targets. “Congress must act immediately to restore independence to our justice system and to protect Americans from this abuse of power. If they don’t, Trump will only go further.” For questions about our work to hold Trump accountable or to request an interview with a Not Above the Law coalition leader, please email press@focalpointstrategygroup.com. |
