WASHINGTON — The Not Above the Law coalition today released Trump’s ‘Crooked Cops:’ The Corruption of Federal Law Enforcement, a report compiling and revealing how Trump and his hand-picked loyalists are abusing their power, leaving Americans less safe with a justice system that serves the President, not the public.

The coalition hosted a press call this afternoon with U.S. Representative Joe Morelle (NY-25), Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration; U.S. Representative Dan Goldman (NY-10), a former prosecutor; Katie Phang, a senior advisor to Democracy Defenders Fund and a former prosecutor; and Lisa Gilbert, co-chair of the Not Above the Law Coalition and co-president of Public Citizen, to share the report’s findings.

The speakers on today’s call highlighted the dangerous common thread connecting Attorney General Pam Bondi, White House Border Czar Tom Homan, Federal Communications Commission Chair Brenden Carr, and many others surrounding them. They explained how investigations targeting political opponents – like the indictment of James Comey – and the unjust firings of career federal employees are corrupt power grabs.

“The president is unilaterally dismantling the independence of the Department of Justice, a foundational pillar of the rule of law in this country,” said U.S. Representative Joe Morelle (NY-25), Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration. “Without an independent Department of Justice, without an independent judiciary, without independent law enforcement, I really fear for the future of this republic.”

“When the United States and our State Department go around the world promoting democracy, the first thing we tell other countries is that you must not prosecute your political enemies. That’s where corruption begins, and it can’t stop after that,” said U.S. Representative Dan Goldman (NY-10). “The politicization of the Department of Justice is the most egregious example of this government’s corruption. This is how democracies die. If you look throughout history, democracies don’t last that long because, at some point, a leader becomes so drunk on power that they dismantle and eviscerate the democracy.”

“The through line, the common denominator that defines Trump and his administration, is corruption. Corruption of the rule of law, corruption of norms and institutions,” said Katie Phang, former prosecutor and senior advisor to Democracy Defenders Fund. “The roles being assumed by people like Kash Patel, Pam Bondi, and others are supposed to represent the people of the United States of America. They are not meant to serve the personal interests – perverted as they are – of one man.”

“The government should be for the people. It should serve justice and law and regular Americans. It should not be distorted to serve the vindictive revenge effort of a single man. Even if that man is the president and the president thinks he is a king,” said Lisa Gilbert, co-chair of the Not Above the Law Coalition and co-president of Public Citizen.

The report examines four key areas: the Justice Department and FBI, border enforcement and deportations, policing of the airwaves, and handling of Americans’ personal records. The full report can be found HERE.
