WASHINGTON, DC — Following the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on “Operation Arctic Frost,” the Not Above the Law coalition’s co-chairs – Lisa Gilbert, Co-President of Public Citizen; Praveen Fernandes, Vice President of the Constitutional Accountability Center; Kelsey Herbert, Campaign Director at MoveOn; and Brett Edkins, Managing Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Stand Up America – released the following statement:
“Today’s hearing was nothing more than political theater designed to retaliate against Jack Smith for doing his job: investigating Donald Trump’s crimes. Senate Republicans are attacking the prosecutor while refusing to call him to testify and continuing to withhold Volume II of his report from the American people. This is a transparent attempt to whitewash January 6th and shield Trump from accountability.
“Jack Smith testified there is ‘evidence beyond a reasonable doubt’ that Trump committed crimes and that ‘Donald Trump is the person who caused January 6th.’ His decisions were driven by facts, evidence, and law, rather than political considerations, – yet Republicans attack the messenger because they can’t refute the evidence itself.
“Senate Republicans are wasting time on this sham, self-interested hearing looking at requests for their phone records instead of addressing the real crises facing American families. The American people deserve the full truth. Republicans must immediately release Volume II of Jack Smith’s report. If there’s nothing to hide, release the full report. No one is above the law – not even Donald Trump.”
