WASHINGTON, DC — Following today’s House Administration Committee hearing, “Make Elections Great Again: How to Restore Trust and Integrity in Federal Elections,” the Not Above the Law coalition’s co-chairs – Lisa Gilbert, Co-President of Public Citizen; Praveen Fernandes, Vice President of the Constitutional Accountability Center; Kelsey Herbert, Campaign Director at MoveOn; and Brett Edkins, Managing Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Stand Up America – released the following statement:
“Today’s hearing is a dangerous distraction. House Republicans are manufacturing false narratives about election threats while ignoring President Trump’s actual assault on democracy and our Constitution– from his years-long campaign of election lies and conspiracy to overturn the 2020 results to his recent attempts to nationalize election administration, and weaponization of the Department of Justice to intimidate voters and officials. And House Republicans are falling in line by attempting to silence American voters under the guise of ‘election integrity.’
“House Republicans are doing Trump’s bidding instead of holding him accountable. The real threats to election integrity sit in the White House and among those enabling his authoritarian agenda. Our democracy depends on rejecting this charade and confronting Trump’s documented attacks on free and fair elections.”
