STATEMENT: New Poll Confirms Majority of Americans Recognize Trump is Abusing DOJ to Target Political Enemies

By October 24, 2025No Comments
WASHINGTON, DC — Following today’s Reuters/Ipsos poll revealing that a majority of Americans believe President Trump is using federal law enforcement to target his enemies, the Not Above the Law coalition warns that this abuse of the justice system is eroding public trust and fueling dangerous political divisions.

The poll follows three politically-motivated indictments in recent weeks of former FBI Director James Comey, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and former National Security Advisor John Bolton – all prominent Trump critics who have denied wrongdoing. Notably, the poll finds that nearly three in ten Republicans also believe that Trump is targeting his enemies.

In response, the Not Above the Law coalition’s co-chairs – Lisa Gilbert, Co-President of Public Citizen; Praveen Fernandes, Vice President of the Constitutional Accountability Center; Kelsey Herbert, Campaign Director at MoveOn; and Brett Edkins, Managing Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Stand Up America – released the following statement:

“The American people see exactly what’s happening: Trump has corrupted the Department of Justice, turning it into his personal revenge machine. When 55% of Americans – including three in ten Republicans – recognize that the president is abusing law enforcement to prosecute his enemies, it’s clear this isn’t a partisan issue anymore. It’s a threat to the rule of law that transcends party lines.

“The pattern is undeniable: James Comey, Letitia James, John Bolton – all Trump critics charged after he publicly demanded their prosecution. DOJ has been co-opted to serve the president, not the public.

“This poll confirms what we’ve been warning about: Trump’s abuse of power is eroding faith in federal institutions as neutral enforcers of the law and deepening the divisions tearing our country apart. Trump’s actions threaten the freedom and safety of all Americans.”
