| WASHINGTON, D.C. — Following President Trump’s statement that he would not abide by federal court orders requiring his administration to restore SNAP benefits to millions of Americans – only to have the White House claim hours later it was “fully complying” with the courts – the Not Above the Law coalition’s co-chairs – Lisa Gilbert, Co-President of Public Citizen; Praveen Fernandes, Vice President of the Constitutional Accountability Center; Kelsey Herbert, Campaign Director at MoveOn; and Brett Edkins, Managing Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Stand Up America – released the following statement: “When a president threatens to ignore a court order, no amount of cleanup from a spokesperson can hide his authoritarian impulses. Trump’s willingness to even suggest defying the federal courts exposes his fundamental contempt for the rule of law and constitutional limits on his power. “Trump is playing politics with people’s lives, and the chaos he’s creating is causing real harm. Right now, 42 million Americans don’t know whether they’ll have the food assistance they depend on because Trump treats court orders as suggestions and the Constitution as an inconvenience. “As American families face higher grocery bills and the prospect of soaring health care premiums, Trump is too busy testing the boundaries of lawlessness to help the American people or follow court orders. No president is above the law. Federal courts have ordered the restoration of food assistance, and Trump must comply – period.” For questions about our work to hold Trump accountable or to request an interview with a Not Above the Law coalition leader, please email press@focalpointstrategygroup.com. |
