WASHINGTON, DC — Yesterday, a federal judge ruled that acting Attorney General Todd Blanche effectively conceded he violated the Epstein Files Transparency Act after the DOJ failed to substantively respond to a lawsuit seeking records the agency has fought to keep hidden. Judge Emmet Sullivan ordered the DOJ to produce the documents by July 2 or justify why it should not be forced to do so.
In response, the Not Above the Law coalition’s co-chairs – Lisa Gilbert, Co-President of Public Citizen; Praveen Fernandes, Vice President of the Constitutional Accountability Center; Kelsey Herbert, Campaign Director at MoveOn; and Brett Edkins, Managing Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Stand Up America – issued the following statement:
“A federal judge’s ruling just confirmed what we already know: Todd Blanche broke the law to help keep the Epstein files buried. But that’s not all – he also granted Epstein co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell special treatment by moving her to a minimum security prison, pushed out the prosecutors who brought her to justice, and continues to withhold millions of documents, all to protect Donald Trump.
“Todd Blanche has spent his career shielding Trump from accountability, and his actions prove he will do the same as Attorney General. A man who prioritizes loyalty to Trump over the rule of law is fundamentally unfit to serve as the American people’s lawyer. The Senate must reject this nomination.”
