WASHINGTON, D.C. — A record 89% of Americans now believe corruption is widespread in the U.S. government, according to a Gallup poll released this week — the highest level recorded in two decades and a 10-point surge from last year. The finding cuts across party lines, with 91% of Democrats, 90% of independents, and 83% of Republicans in agreement. The United States has also pulled ahead of every other advanced economy in the OECD on this measure, where the median stands at just 59%.
“This poll confirms what Americans are watching play out in real time,” said Lisa Gilbert, Not Above the Law co-chair. “Todd Blanche’s Justice Department goes after Donald Trump’s perceived enemies while shielding his allies and himself. Trump and those around him keep discovering new ways to profit from the presidency, from crypto ventures to pardons for allies to deals that enrich his family, all while everyday Americans struggle to afford groceries, housing, and health care. That’s the corruption Americans see: a government that works overtime for the people at the top and leaves everyone else to fend for themselves. The remedy is accountability for corporate and government bad actors and robust policy solutions to rein in this corruption. No one, including the President of the United States, should be above the law.”
