WASHINGTON, DC — Following yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling in Trump v. Illinois, which refused to disturb a lower court order blocking the Trump administration’s deployment of National Guard troops to Illinois, the Not Above the Law coalition’s co-chairs – Lisa Gilbert, Co-President of Public Citizen; Praveen Fernandes, Vice President of the Constitutional Accountability Center; Kelsey Herbert, Campaign Director at MoveOn; and Brett Edkins, Managing Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Stand Up America – released the following statement:
“While we’re relieved the Supreme Court refused to tamper with a lower court order blocking this unlawful deployment of National Guard forces against peaceful protesters, make no mistake: this ruling does not end Trump’s threat to use military force against American civilians. The Trump administration has repeatedly shown that it is willing to deploy servicemembers for political reasons, endangering the safety of our communities and threatening our constitutional right to protest peacefully.
“Using the National Guard to suppress dissent is un-American, and it’s exactly the kind of overreach our Constitution and our federal laws were designed to prevent. Servicemembers must never be used as political tools of the president.”
