WASHINGTON, DC — Following the California State Bar Court’s decision to disbar attorney John Eastman for his role in trying to overturn the 2020 election, the Not Above the Law coalition’s co-chairs – Lisa Gilbert, Co-President of Public Citizen; Praveen Fernandes, Vice President of the Constitutional Accountability Center; Kelsey Herbert, Campaign Director at MoveOn; and Brett Edkins, Managing Director for Policy and Political Affairs at Stand Up America – issued the following statement applauding the disbarment while condemning the Trump administration’s ongoing efforts to shield January 6 insurrectionists from accountability:
“John Eastman’s disbarment is a victory for the rule of law. The California State Bar Court’s decision sends an unmistakable message: lawyers who subvert our elections will face consequences.
“Yet even in this moment of accountability, the Trump DOJ is working to eraseconvictions of those found guilty of seditious conspiracy on January 6th. The contradiction is stark: accountability for some, impunity for others.
“Eastman’s disbarment proves that our institutions can hold the line, even as the DOJ tries to shield January 6 seditionists and put loyalty to this administration above the law. The American people deserve accountability for every perpetrator of the January 6th attack – from the architects to the rioters.”
